Job Description

Sonic Powersports is seeking a San Diego-based Controller to support three Harley-Davidson dealerships we are acquiring in California and Florida. This is a fantastic opportunity for the right candidate to join our team during an exciting period of growth and contribute to one of the fastest-growing powersports groups in the country.

As part of Sonic Automotive, the Controller is responsible for ensuring strong financial controls are implemented and consistently executed in compliance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and Company policies. The Controller leads the dealership office staff, ensuring the timely and accurate completion of all assigned accounting and financial responsibilities.

The Controller serves as a key business partner to the dealership General Managers and operates under the direction of the Regional Controller. This role is responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, safeguarding assets, and ensuring all policies and procedures are followed.  In partnership with the Powersports Central Office and Corporate teams, the Controller oversees all dealership financial operations, including payroll, daily accounting functions, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and asset management.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • The Controller’s primary responsibility is to ensure that all books and records are accurate at all times.
  • Ensure all Company policies and procedures are clearly communicated and consistently followed.
  • Maintain strong internal controls to ensure compliance with Company policies and financial standards.
  • Supervise, train, and develop dealership office personnel.
  • Review and audit balance sheets and supporting schedules regularly, proactively addressing any discrepancies while keeping the Regional Controller informed of issues or potential liabilities.
  • Perform month-end closing duties per the required deadlines.
  • Ensure the timely and accurate completion of financial statements, monthly work papers, and required reports.
  • Reconcile and submit sales and use tax filings for all locations in a timely and accurate manner, and ensure compliance with all applicable government fees and licensing requirements.
  • Monitor and manage expenses to ensure the dealership operates responsibly and within established financial guidelines.

Salary: $90,000 - $120,000 / year, based on experience

  • Dealership or Powersports Controller experiences is required.
  • Lightspeed experiences is highly preferred.
  • Experience performing multiple reconciliations including vehicle inventories, floorplan, and vendor accounts. 
  • Very strong computer skills, particularly with Excel and the Microsoft Office suite.
  • Knowledge of California labor laws a plus.
  • Some travel is required being that the dealerships are in California and Florida.
